Rosie's Garden Quilt - First 2026 UFO Finish

The flimsy for this quilt was an entry for Pantone's 2019 Color of the Year (Living Coral) Challenge, The name for my entry was "The Coral of the Story", and I posted about it here. I thought I would win the challenge, but I was never notified - I'm sure it was an oversight.

I had intended to add a border, but since it has been a UFO for 6-1/2 years, I decided to just get it done as is. It will be used it as a guest bedroom quilt. Our granddaughter Laney likes corals and pinks, so it will be her personal quilt when she visits.

Orphan blocks .from the 2023 Riley Blake Challenge were perfect with the pieced backing

The batting was a masterpiece of Frankenbatting

A fussy cut kitty in one of the Riley Blake blocks

I used a free pantograph for the quilting

Rosie's Garden seemed an appropriate name, since my assistant kitty Rosie laid on it no matter where I moved it while trying to sew or cut pieces for it. She especially enjoyed the gingham backing pieces I had scattered on the cutting table. When I tried to sew on the binding, she kept trying to paw herself a little quilt nest, and I finally had to shoo her away. So maybe it will become her quilt instead of Laney's.

  1. Rosie's Garden is a beautiful quilt, Linda. The front is unique and I love the colors. The pieced backing with leftover blocks is a pretty quilt in itself.

  2. LOL I'm sure they overlooked notifying you by mistake of course - I think it looks great and what an excellent job on that batting - I never have much patience for it. I bet the granddaughter will love the quilt in the room she uses.

  3. Very pretty! Love how you came up with the name. Does Rosie like napping in the guest room? If not maybe she will now. Congrats on the finish.

  4. What do people do who don't have an assistant art project / sewing project cat???

  5. Linda, that is just gorgeous - I definitely think you deserve first prize! And hooray for finishing something that had been hanging in the closet for awhile, too. I love the main quilt design, but also the way you used those Riley Blake blocks on the back - they are a fun surprise! Beautiful quilt, whether it is for Rosie or Laney - or maybe they will share it!

  6. It's beautiful! I love the story of renaming it for Rosie. I've created very similar frankenbatting pieces. Especially last year when I was on the RSC quilt "roll". I was amazed at how many quilts I was able to complete from the small scraps! I considered them all "bonus" quilts because I paid out no additional $$ to make them... They were all FREE. Thanks for sharing in Sew & Tell.

  7. I love that you were able to use up orphans for the backing, and the frankenbatting was a great use too for such a pretty quilt. Well done!

  8. Wow, that is a pretty quilt! The pieced backing is like an entire additional quilt. The colors on the back and front all coordinate!

  10. That is such a beautiful finish! I love the colors, what looks like complicated details in the quilting. The back looks like another quilt! Beautiful job! 11. So cute, Linda!!! And reversible! You crossed off so many boxes with this finish, including a great use of batting scraps! Definitely a winner!!!

  12. Aaaw Rosie's Garden is gorgeous and I love that it is reversible. I had to laugh when you revealed why you named the quilt as you did. Maybe if you promise Rosie another quilt she will have no problem letting Laney snuggle under this quilt. Hugs.

  13. It certainly didn't take you long to get a finish in 2026! I've never seen batting quite that pieced. Very nice.

  15. I am so sorry they couldn't reach you about your prize...gheez. I do love this quilt and love the back too. Rosie is a beauty and Rosie's Garden is even more beautiful. It is fun that there is a party on the back, too, and I am sure your granddaughter will love using it. I am guessing it is time for a sleepover to check it out!
