Little House SAL, RSC Blocks, and Orphans

This is the last block for Melva's Little House SAL! Melva's pattern (see her version in this post) called for a really cute nine-patch block, but I had a fussy cut I desperately wanted to use in this SAL, so mine is modified a bit.

Here is the center block up close

I am eagerly awaiting Melva's layout suggestions for these completed Little House blocks

The Nine-Patch orange blocks and Snowball blocks are completed for May. The color for June is "pastel" - to use up all the "extra light" colors in the scrap bins. I'm not sure how light I can go on these blocks, because they need contrast, but I'm happy to give it a try.

Scrappy Irish Chain blocks
I recently dived into the Orphanage basket and set aside blocks that were unappealing to me (hopefully appealing to someone else) to donate to Goodwill. I kept these 8-1/2 inch Scrappy Irish Chain blocks. I made them in 2020, after seeing Cynthia's on Quilting is more fun than Housework... , and posting about them on my old blog. I spent some time pondering layouts and admiring chain quilts on Diann's blog, like the one in this post and this heart and chain quilt. Most likely I will simply add light blocks in between the chain blocks, but I am open to suggestions! I do need to add more chain blocks to bring it up to a nice lap-sized quilt.

I am joining these linkups:

  1. Aaw your Prairie Rose Block is beautiful, Linda. I love that you fussy cut the rose for the center. Your palette is just beautiful. Oooh and those lovely snowball blocks. How fun and vibrant- just love it. I can not wait to see your plans for the Irish Chain unfold. Have a wonderful evening. Hugs.

  2. Those fussy cut roses are perfect for your Little House block, Linda! I love the look of your blocks all together - they have a beautiful vintage look. Fun RSC blocks in orange, too. The pastel colors in June are going to be challenging for me, too, but like you, I'll give it a try! And the Irish Chain blocks make a beautiful design - now I want to make some of those, lol! Thanks for the shout out - I couldn't even think of any chain quilt designs I had made when you asked the other day. I think a neutral alternate block would keep the Irish Chain design front and center.

  3. You have three very nice projects coming together. I truly love the beautiful things we can create from our scraps. I cannot choose a favorite between the log cabin blocks and the Irish Chain.

  5. Your orange progress looks great, I love the snowballs and nine patches together. How about making some cute star blocks to go with the chains?

  6. The fussy cut really did need to be part of the On the Prairie quilt. The orange and black RSC blocks turned out nicely. You could do pastel/light 4 patch blocks as your alternate block with those chain blocks.

  9. I always get great ideas reading your blog, and am adding scrappy Irish chain to my list of someday makes. It's really fun, and I agree with so many others: light squares in between. Cute Little House blocks (love the fussy-cut rose), and I also love the nine-patch/snowball blocks. A fun post, Linda!

  10. Well it's been awhile since I dropped in! Love the new look for the blog. These are all lovely projects. Honestly, chains are always a fave for me and I don't think there is any way you can go wrong with them, no matter what you do! If you want the quick finish, go for it!

  11. Your 9-patches are looking great, Linda! My experience is go lighter on the 9-patches. They'll still contrast and will give the quilt a lighter, airier feeling.

  13. Lots of cute things to look at here! I like the fussy cut rose—a lot. I will be interested to see how you set the nine log cabin blocks. Those chain blocks would be a great RSC project. That is such a classic pattern, and I don’t think you can go wrong whether you put solid blocks or pieced blocks between the chains.

  14. Oh yes, that fussy cut rose is perfect! I'm glad you were able to make it work. It will be interesting to see Melva's final layout. It will also be interesting to see how you include pastels in the snowball quilt. I've seen others post they find pastels a challenge to include for RSC. I think the scrappy Irish blocks look great in the current layout, so adding solid blocks would work.

  15. Still loving your Log Cabin project!! And those chains are going to make qa wonderful quilt. Pastel, eh, not going to work for my plans, so I will make extras of the colors I have already done.

  16. My little house blocks do not really match together at all. Thinking back I wish I would have made them matching like you others.

    1. Awww Marsha, I've done that before and used the blocks together. Maybe use a unifying sashing? But see what you think when you put them together, I bet they will be fine.
