Placemats!
Diann of Little Penguin Quilts has inspired me for the longest time with her pretty placemats. So I finally gave them a try and finished up six of them. I used some orphan blocks and a lot of scrappy bits and dabs - it was so satisfying! Now that I've used up some orphans, I want to try different designs.
My husband likes big plates, so he bought the biggest trays he could find. They are Blackstone, and they are big - and not very pretty - lol - but perfect for his plate (the big blue one).
MULLING
Wings of Wonder fabric - Sue Penn for Freespirit - and a couple coordinating fabrics for lining/pocketYou might recall that my 23 year-old granddaughter Sammy requested I make a tote for her friend who graduated college. I found a glorious fabric with all her colors but have yet to decide on a pattern. I thought I was going to use the By Annie Stand 'n Stow, but for some reason I just can't commit to it. I have Soft 'n Stable, but will go to Hobby Lobby next week to look at their fusible foam and make a decision.
MENDING
Granddaughter-in-law Raegan sent us a photo of a ragged hole in their pretty duvet cover and asked if I would be able to repair it. Their puppy Arlo is the culprit!Naughty Arlo and his Pawrents - Raegan and Brandon
Pottery Barn photo of the duvet cover
This is a well made Pottery Barn piece with generous corner seams. I was able to inconspicuously cut out fabric from inside one of the corners, and it worked perfectly for the repair. Even though I was unable to match perfectly the trees and leaves in the toile pattern, it still blended nicely. I replaced that fabric with a similar density fabric, and no one will ever see it. Brandon and Raegan came for lunch last Saturday and picked it up. They were SO appreciative!
BEST FRIENDS
This is Terry's layout so far for her Triple Treat blocks - so pretty!
Terry at On Going Projects made a quilt start from project leftovers by using Bonnie Hunter's Triple Treat pattern! Terry gave me permission to use her photo above - I just love it! It is amazing how simple scraps and blocks can make a gorgeous chain - and I am a pushover for chains! Terry said she was "shocked that these busy little bits of leftovers could live like best friends!" I love that comment so much! If my blocks ever make it to a quilt, I will call it Best Friends - thanks Terry!
My first scrappy Best Friends block
Redwork Baubles kitted up and partially sewn block waiting for center embroidery finish
Joy of Days Filled With Joy has started a new BOM. Go check it out right here - it will be a Redwork Christmas quilt called Floral Baubles! As with her other BOMs and SALs, each block of the month pattern is free for the month, then becomes available in her Payhip shop. There will be 9 blocks in this quilt, and each block is 12-1/2 inches unfinished.
I "might" do the RSC blocks for June - pastel is not working for me but maybe another color - and I need to make the block of the month for A Quilting Life. Plus I need to sew my Little House blocks together for a finish! But I won't get all these things done before our Grands come on Friday for the weekend. I have a couple projects lined up for them to do - they clamor for Grandma's sewing machine!

So neat your grands love your sewing machine! I so enjoyed the days my grands came to sew. I agree Terry's block kinda stuck in my mind since seeing it. Maybe some day. Nice patch job!
ReplyDeleteThe placemats are phenomenal! I have long wanted to make pieced placemats like these. Not too long ago, I found an article that I had pulled out of the feature section of the newspaper that showed a dining table with three different handmade, quilted runners, one running the length of the table and the other two running across the width because I thought it was the coolest thing ever. Everything was handmade, and the look was really striking. I have thought about that table a lot over the years. I love what you’ve done with the placemats, and I also love your husband‘s “big“ plate. I hope there are more placemats in your future because I would really love to see them.
ReplyDeleteI like the placemats! The blue ones look so nice on the orange trays. You did a super job on the duvet repair. If you’re like me, that’s the type of job I have to think about for a few days before I can commit to getting it done. I love the wings of winder fabric—beautiful colors!
ReplyDeleteI've made the Stand & Stow several times, but I also have some other bag suggestions if you are looking for some. Well done on the duvet repair, too (that's why I like cats). that chain quilt is fun!
ReplyDeleteSounds like you did a bit of every thing this week. So glad you were able to repair the puppy damage. The new embroidery project is fun. Happy stitching this weekend.
ReplyDeleteDiann is so clever with her placemats from leftover fabrics. You've made some nice ones that fit the trays perfectly. Those are lovely fabrics you've selected for the tote. Hope you can find a pattern you like soon. You did a great job repairing the duvet. I really like that one, too. I am amazed at how well Terry's scraps work together in her Irish Chain quilt, and it looks like yours are going to be 'best friends' as well. Good luck with your plans and enjoy the time with your family.
ReplyDeleteLinda, your placemats look great! The blue ones are really pretty with the orange trays. Great job patching the comforter, too - I'm always afraid of those jobs! I also loved Terry's Triple Treat layout - have fun working on yours. And have fun with the grands - that's neat that they want to sew!
ReplyDeletedogs can be the naughty! nice that you could fix it. Those are some nice tray covers and quilts in the works. I asked for some trays one time when hubs was out to keep a look out and it seems lime green was picked out -- not quite what I wanted LOL
ReplyDeleteSuch pretty projects on the go! I love the new baubles project, but know I won't keep up with it, so I will live vicariously through yours. LOL
ReplyDeleteAaw your placemats are great, Linda ; the perfect size for the serving trays too. You did a fabulous job on mending the duvet cover. It is so nice that this duvet had generous seams that you could get fabric from . I really like the Best Friends block. They would be a good leader / ender project too. Thank you for sharing Joy's new BOM. She always has the cutest embroideries. Have a great weekend. Hugs.
ReplyDeleteYou have a great collection of placemats there, nice to use up some orphans etc. Great work with that repair. Your friends blocks look good. xx
ReplyDeleteSew much fun going on in your studio, Linda! Orphan blocks = placemats--great idea!!! Looking cute with your blue plates, too! Have a great weekend with the grands!!!
ReplyDeleteI love seeing the process of the new quilt that's coming along!
